Travel Book Types and PublishersThe content of travel guides varies greatly, depending on the publisher. The right guide book for your travel style will greatly enhance your vaction.
Lonely Planet GuidesLonely Planet Publications are aimed at the adventurous, more budget-conscious travelers. The series offers many titles for Asia and the Indian subcontinent, and also for Africa and South America. Lonely Planet Guides have extensive text, many black/white maps, and have both black-and-white and color photographs. Chapters typically include Facts About the Country covering history, geography, economy, and culture; Facts for the Visitor covering topics related to daily survival in the country such as visas, customs, money, electricity, dangers, and food; Getting There and Away covers travel to and from the country; Getting Around covers travel in the country; and sections on the major cities and regions of the subject country. These guides cover all of the well-known tourist sites, and also include extensive descriptions of sites off the beaten track. Lonely Planet also offers pocket language phrasebooks for most of the destinations covered by their guidebooks. Michelin GuidesProduced in France, the Michelin Guides have become famous over the years for their in-depth information and for the impartiality of the authors in their famous rating system. The books are well suited for travelers who want detailed descriptions and extensive cultural and historical tours. The series covers western Europe and some U.S. destinations. Most of the titles are in English, but some of the books covering regions in France are available only in French. Michelin guides have many small maps showing suggested routes, detailed city-center maps and black/white sketches, but have only a few color photographs. Recommended excursions are described in detail; main sights and additional sights are discussed. Each site is referenced to Michelin’s road maps and hotel Red Guides. Chapters include Introduction to the Tour, covering history, economy, and architecture; Touring Programs, with maps showing the suggested tour routes; Practical Information; a short vocabulary section; and the extensive Towns and Sights section. One drawback of the Michelin Guides is that the typesize is very small, and people with poor eyesight often have trouble reading the text. Michelin also produces a series of very detailed hotel and restaurant guides called the Red Series. Moon Publications has titles covering Asia, the Pacific, Mexico, and a good selection of books covering the western states in the U.S. Moon Guides have numerous sketch maps, diagrams, and black-and-white photographs and some color photographs. They begin with a general Introduction that provides an overview of the country along with basic travel information. Several sections cover the major regions, giving information on history, culture, and detailed travel information.
